Crackdown on Talking Cabbies

Monday, February 1, 2010

A team of undercover Taxi and Limousine Commission agents are enforcing the new, super-strict laws banning cabbies from using any electronic devices while driving. On Friday, January 29, 2010, the day the new laws went into effect, the agents gave numerous cabbies tickets for talking on their phones. A team of the TLC agents were positioned outside of Grand Central Terminal and 42nd Street was checking cabs as they rode by. At other times, agents got into cabs pretending they were regular drivers while they watched for any illegal activity.

According to the New York Post, 142 summonses had been issued by TLC agents by Sunday, January 31, 2010. The NYPD, which also is enforcing the new laws, said it hadn’t compiled its numbers yet. According to the new laws, all electronic devices are banned. TLC official think that these new laws will help reduce the amount of auto accidents in New York.
