A truck carrying motor oil and anti-freeze caught fire causing its contents to spill out and hurt two people in Staten Island on January 11, 2009. A firefighter and the truck driver suffered injuries at the accident. The firefighter suffered minor injuries battling the blaze according to an FDNY spokesman. The driver of the truck was taken to an area hospital; he may be eligible to receive Workers’ Compensation benefits in New York.
The truck was by a Mobil gas station when it caught fire but, luckily, the fire did not damage the gas station. According to Staten Island Live, a witness, Michael LoSardo, said he witnessed the truck on fire being driven away from the gas station in an attempt to prevent the fire from heading to the gas station pumps. According to an FDNY spokesman, an FDNY hazardous materials unit was summoned, as was a Sanitation sander and a salt spreader. Con Ed was also called to examine the overhead electrical wires for possible fire damage.
