Johnson & Johnson Expands its Tylenol Recall

Friday, January 15, 2010

On January 15, 2010, Johnson & Johnson expanded its recall of a number of its over-the-counter medications including Tylenol geltabs, caplets, arthritis treatments, rapid release, extended relief Tylenol, Motrin IB, chewable extra strength Rolaids, Benadryl allergy tablets, and St. Joseph aspirin. It is the second time in the last month that the company has expanded the recall because of a moldy smell that has made some medicine users sick. Medical malpractice lawyers in New York think the Food and Drug Administration should monitor this situation closely.

According to Staten Island Live, this recall applies to products sold in the Western Hemisphere, United Arab Emirates, and Fiji. According to Johnson & Johnson, the smell of the medications caused nausea, stomach pain, vomiting, and diarrhea. According to CNN News, the company says the smell is caused by small amounts of a chemical called "2, 4, 6-tribomoanisole", which is applied to wooden pallets that are used to transport and store packaging materials.
