Three women tragically lost their lives and a man was critically injured in a rash of pedestrian and automobile accidents in New York City on January 6, 2009. Automobile and pedestrian accidents in New York have become too common. These accidents occurred in Staten Island, Manhattan, and Brooklyn.
On Staten Island, a woman from Brooklyn, allegedly high on pills, struck a couple jogging along Hylan Boulevard near Lipsett Avenue in Annadale. Special-education teacher Daniel Kelley, 23, was in critical condition after being struck. His running partner, St. Francis College student Gina Siclari, 18, suffered a broken ankle and bruises. The driver, Gypsy Porfirio, was charged last night with criminal possession of a controlled substance and driving while impaired.
In Manhattan, a bicyclist tragically died after she was hit by a school bus on the Lower East Side. The cyclist, whose name has not been released, was riding east in a bike lane on Delancey Street near the Williamsburg Bridge when she was struck by the bus. Another woman lost her life in Brooklyn. According to the New York Post, Rosemary Pratt was struck and killed by a forklift moving materials for a subway overpass repair project near the corner of East 14th Street and Avenue M. Another Brooklyn woman was killed at the intersection of Classon and Pacific streets in Prospect Heights after being struck by an oil truck.
When a vehicle hits a pedestrian, there is a high probability that the pedestrian will suffer serious injuries. According to automobile accident lawyers in New York, drivers should take appropriate precautions when driving because, if there is an accident, there also is the potential for a serious injury.
