High Line Park is New York City’s newest greenway. A greenway is a long narrow piece of land used for recreational purposes. According to the High Line website, High Line Park is a public park built on 1.45-mile-long elevated rail structure from Gansevoort Street to 34th Street on Manhattan’s West Side. From 1934 to 1980, the High Line was a freight rail line that carried meat, agricultural goods, and mail.
Have you ever heard of the expression "money doesn’t grow on trees?" Well this park better hope that money does grow on trees. The elevated promenade has pedestrians tripping over raised concrete slabs.
Paula Shapiro, 66, is one of those pedestrians. Ms. Shapiro, along with her New York personal injury lawyer, filed a $2 million claim against the city. According to court papers, Ms. Shapiro said she broke her left ankle during an evening stroll along the High Line path on June 21, 2009. Her claim states that she tripped near a median of trees and flowers surrounded by “raised, uneven, depressed decorative concrete.”
