The Consumer Product Safety Commission announced one of the largest recalls of cribs on Monday, November 23, 2009. The Stork Craft company, based in Canada, will recall 2.1 million cribs because of problems with drop down sides. Four deaths have been linked to the crib. New York personal injury lawyers would say that these tragic deaths are preventable.
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the recall involves 1.2 million cribs in the United States and 1 million in Canada. Approximately 150,000 of the cribs recalled contain the Fisher-Price logo.
Researchers have found that the side of the crib designed to slide down when pushed from the outside, can drop on its own. This can cause the baby to be trapped between the mattress and the railing with the possibility of suffocating and strangling the baby. The cheaper, poorly constructed cribs are more susceptible to the malfunction.
In the past two years, more than 10 million unsafe cribs have been recalled. According to WPIX, many retailers have already stopped selling drop side cribs.
