Man Struck and Killed on Montauk Highway

Tuesday, October 20, 2009

The body of Elmer Mendez, 32, was found at 8 a.m. Monday October 19, 2009 on the Montauk Highway in Yaphank. According to a Newsday article, Mr. Mendez was allegedly struck and killed by Kevin Daly, 19, in a tragic accident and lay undiscovered for ten hours on the side of the road, because the Suffolk police were searching for Mr. Mendez in the wrong area.

Mr. Daly reported to the police that he had struck something at about 10 p.m. on Sunday October 18, 2009. The officers searched the location that Mr. Daly gave but he had mistakenly given police the wrong location. It wasn’t until 8 a.m. on Monday, October 19, 2009, that a passing motorist reported seeing a body face down in the brush alongside the Montauk Highway.
