Killing More People Than HIV/AIDS Or Cancer
Monday, April 23, 2007
Can you guess what kills more people than HIV/AIDS or Cancer every year? Road accidents!
In the article, Road Crashes Kill More Young People Than HIV/AIDS Or Cancer, the World Health Organization's (WHO) report reveals that more people are killed by road accidents than HIV/AIDS or cancer. The report says 1.2 million people die in road crashes every year and 50 million more are hurt at an estimated cost of more than $500 billion in lost income and disability.
According to the "Youth and Road Safety" report, automobile accidents kill around 400,000 people under 25, mostly male, every year while millions more are injured or disabled. The victims include children playing on the street, pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists, novice drivers and passengers of public transport. The report says traffic mishaps are main cause of death of 15- to 19-year olds while a second cause in deaths of adolescents.

Verizon New York Inc. Facing Workers Compensation Lawsuit
Dwight Murray, an employee of Verizon New York Inc. has chosen to file a retaliation civil suit against Verizon in the State Supreme Court of New York. This suit came after filing numerous complaints with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) department of Verizon and filing a complaint with the State Division of Human Rights.
According to the news release Verizon New York Inc. Facing Lawsuit, the complaint alleges that Mr. Murray suffered retaliation as a direct result of filing racial discrimination charges with the New York State Division of Human Rights, which is a protected activity, by a protected class, according to State and Federal Law.
This started in 2005 when Mr. Murray, an 18-year employee of Verizon, first went to court after being hospitalized following a confrontation with his then supervisor. Verizon contested its liability, as well as the validity of Mr. Murray’s injuries despite being provided with verifiable proof from a cardiologist. Mr. Murray then fought and won his case before the Workers Compensation Court.

Construction Accidents in Downtown New York
Wednesday, April 11, 2007
In a recent blog post, Safety Rails Put Up Too Late, we reported on 24-year-old Jonathan Fundalinski, a construction worker who had a fatal accident on March 20 while working at the Webb Building in downtown Buffalo. Worker advocates say his accident highlights a common and largely preventable cause of workplace deaths. Fundalinski's fatal fall is the latest in a string of incidents at downtown rehab projects, according to The Buffalo News.
In the article, Construction accidents take a toll, published on April 3 in The Buffalo news, "since the start of 2003, 29 people have died in workplace accidents in Western New York. A third of those workers died from falls." Even more have been injured severely.
In December 2004, Dan D'Andrea was working at the old Holling Press building, one of downtown’s first housing rehabilitation projects, when a large piece of scaffolding fell from above and landed on his back. The accident left him paralyzed from the chest down.

New York Construction Accident Lawyer Praised in Courtroom
Monday, April 2, 2007
David H. Perecman, a veteran New York construction accident lawyer and co-founder of the personal injury law firm of Perecman & Fanning, was recently praised by opposing legal counsel as a “very experienced attorney” who is “very aggressive in the courtroom.”
The praise came during a case that made headlines, where a 61-year-old construction worker, represented by Mr. Perecman, had fractured his hip when a scaffold collapsed on a job. New York City Civil Court Judge Eileen A. Rakower ruled for Mr. Perecman’s client, awarding him $2.8 million for his injuries. The case, Kazimierz Brulinski v. 10 East End Avenue Owner’s Inc., made construction accident news as another example of the increasing issue of construction accidents in New York City.
“It was a large case with a very experienced attorney - David Perecman has won a lot of big verdicts. He’s very aggressive in the courtroom, and he’ll tell you that,” Christopher Murray, a senior attorney at Fiedelman Garfinkel & Lesman and legal counsel who lost that construction accident case, told Judicial Reports.
David Perecman, one of the leading personal injury lawyers in New York City, has represented victims of construction accidents throughout New York City for over 25 years. Mr. Perecman works hard for victims of construction accidents and their families to ensure they recover for their injuries and their suffering.
